National Cholesterol Month 2026

National Cholesterol Month, organised by HEART UK, is an annual initiative focused on increasing awareness of the dangers of high cholesterol and its effect on heart health, and it takes place every October. HEART UK is the UK’s only cholesterol charity, providing support, information and influencing services for families and health professionals.

This National Cholesterol Month, our message is simple:  Cholesterol Matters. Every Swap Counts.

Small changes to the choices you make every day can add up to make a big difference to your heart health. From what you eat to how you move, making simple, achievable swaps can help you look after your cholesterol and your heart.

Swap the Scroll for a Stroll - Walk This October for HEART UK

Swap some of your screen time for step time and take on a walking challenge for heart health this October.

This National Cholesterol Month, we’re encouraging people across the UK to make small, positive lifestyles changes that can make a big difference to their heart health.

By taking part in Swap the Scroll for a Stroll, you’ll be helping HEART UK raise awareness of high cholesterol — a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia — while challenging yourself to move more throughout October.

Whether you walk during your lunch break, enjoy evening strolls, take walking meetings, head outdoors with family and friends, or walk with your dog, every mile counts.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of blood fat which is made in the liver. It’s found in some foods too.

We all need some cholesterol in our bodies just to keep us ticking over, but having too much can clog up your arteries and lead to health problems in the future, including heart disease.

By getting a simple cholesterol test and making healthy lifestyle changes, most people can keep their cholesterol levels healthy.

Your cholesterol and triglycerides can become raised for a number of reasons. For example: having a diet high in saturated fats, not being active enough, so the fats you eat aren't used up for energy, genetic conditions which mean the fats aren't processed in the usual way and other medical conditions.
