What is Group B Strep Awareness Week?
Group B Strep Awareness Week (8–14 July 2025) is a dedicated week to raise awareness of group B Strep – the most common cause of serious infection in newborn babies in the UK. Infections that are usually preventable.
The week aims to inform expectant parents, healthcare professionals, and communities about the risks, prevention, and importance of testing and early treatment. By raising awareness, we can help protect more babies from avoidable group B Strep infections.
Group B Strep Support
Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is the world’s leading charity working to eradicate group B Strep infection in babies. GBSS is a small charity, founded in 1996 by Jane Plumb (the current CEO) and her husband, Robert, after their middle child died from group B Strep infection.
How does group B Strep affect me?
Even if you’re not pregnant, you might know someone who is — a friend, partner, sibling, or colleague. Group B Strep (GBS) is a common type of bacteria that can cause serious infections in newborns, but with the right awareness and care, it’s usually preventable.
Whether you're expecting a baby or supporting someone who is, understanding GBS means you can help ensure the right steps are taken to protect newborns.
Raising awareness could help save a life.
